1. Knowledge objects
  (1) To learn some new words: north、south
  (2) To make the Ss know“Beijing is the capital of China.”
(3) To make the Ss know some famous cities in China and can use  the sentences“It’s in the north south / east / west.”to introduce some places.
   2. Ability objects
     (1) To develop the Ss’ abilities of listening, speaking and reading.
     (2) To develop the Ss’ abilities of communication by learning the useful structures.
   3. Moral objects
     (1) To develop the Ss’ interests in English.
     (2) To know more about our country.

   (2) Sentences: Beijing is the capital of China.
               It’s in the north / south / east / west.

Ⅵ. Teaching Procedure
   Step 1   Greeting
           T: Hello, boys and girls!
           Ss: Hello, Miss Tong!
   Step 2   Warm-up
           (1) Ask and answer
              T: How are you?
              Ss: I’m fine , thank you.
              T: What day is it today?
              Ss: It’s Thursday.
              T: What’s the weather like?
              Ss: It’s sunny.
              T: Do you like swimming/watching TV/ singing English songs?
Ss: Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.
(2) Sing an English song: London Bridge is Falling Down
   T: Do you know this Song London Bridge is Falling
Down ? Ok, let’s sing together, and clap your hands.
(3) Show a compass, guess the meaning of “E” and “W”,
review “east” and “west”.
T: East, east, right. West, west, left.
Ss:East, east, right. West, west, left.
   Step 3   Presentation
           (1) Guess the meaning of “N” and “S” on the compass, make the Ss know “N” means “north”, “S” means “south”.
           (2) Learn new words: north, south.
              T: North, north, up. South, south, down.
              Ss: North, north, up. South, south, down.
           (3) Game: Point and Say
              a) T says English, the Ss point.
              b) T points, the Ss say English.
           (4) Show a map of America , review words and sentences:
              “Washington D.C. is the capital of America. It’s in the east. New York is in the east, too. San Francisco is a nice city. It’s in the west.”
           (5) Show a place named “Los Angeles”, learn to say “It’s in the west.”
           (6) Show a picture about Beijing. Make the Ss know “Beijing is the capital of China.”
(7) Show a map of China, ask the Ss guess where Beijing is , and ask one student to put a card “Beijing”on the map. Then make the Ss know “Beijing is in the north.”
(8) Show 2 pictures , ask the Ss guess where it is, then tell them it’s Sanya. Make the Ss know “Sanya is a famous city in China.”
(9) Show a map of China, ask the Ss guess where Sanya is , and ask one student to put a card “Sanya”on the map. Then make the Ss know “Sanya is in the south.”
   Step 4   Chant
           (1) Finish the chant.
          Beijing, Beijing, it’s in the north.
Sanya, Sanya, it’s in the south.
Washington D.C. , it’s in the east.
San Francisco , it’s in the west.
(2) Clap the hands and read the chant together.
(3) 4 groups read the chant.
   Step 5   Practice
           Show some pictures about famous cities such as Shanghai, Hongkong, Lhasa and Hohhot, practice the sentences “It’s in the north/ south/ east/ west.”
Step 6   Extension activities
           Show some provinces in China, and practice “… is in the north/ south/ east/ west.” Then make the Ss know other directions such as “northeast”, “northwest”, “southeast” and “southwest.”
   Step 7   Homework
           Tell your friends something about the places that you know, using this new sentence:
            “ … is in the north/ south/ east/ west.”
